In 2015, Daily Show producer CJ Hunt was filming the New Orleans City Council's vote to remove four Confederate monuments. When death threats halted the removal, Hunt set out to understand why.

What began as a short comedy evolved into an investigation of the Lost Cause - the mythology that reframed the Confederacy as noble heritage. Hunt visits Confederate reenactors, the Whitney Plantation, and Charlottesville's neo-Nazi demonstrations. In this journey , he learns that most Confederate monuments were built not after the Civil War but decades later - during Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement - deliberately designed to send a message about racial power.
