Summary

Katia and Maurice Krafft spent twenty years chasing erupting volcanoes, standing closer to exploding lava than anyone thought possible.

Built entirely from their archival films, this Oscar-nominated documentary reveals a love triangle between two scientists and the fiery forces that consumed them. Armed with 16mm cameras and asbestos suits, they captured spectacular volcanic imagery that pioneered modern volcanology and saved tens of thousands of lives. Katia, one of the first women pioneers in geosciences, and Maurice shared infectious joy for danger—rowing boats through sulfuric lakes, camping on crater edges. Their work was revolutionary science delivered with childlike wonder.

A meditation on passion, discovery, and living fully at the edge of existence.
